What have We become?

I gave this speech as a senior in high school one year after 9/11. I read this after I woke up this morning, 9 years later and could only wonder; What happened?
One year ago today, two events happened that will change the face of our nation for years to come. One event was, terrible and destructive; the other powerful and inspiring. As those tall, symbolic, and majestic towers fell; our nation experienced a surge unity and patriotism not tasted since Dec. 7, 1941. Our nation came together with no regard for race, religion, or politics proclaiming the resolve, determination, and love of country our forefathers possessed when they fought for our country’s very being. Ordinary citizens lent their support to the victims of the tragedy, unknowingly become heroes before our very eyes. Those who would celebrate in the tragedy were silenced by the voice of freedom and the truth that all men were created equally. We once again became one nation under God and set the sights of freedom on terrorism and the axis of evil. The flag of our nation stood tall as ever before as we set out in search of our attackers with passion in our hearts, fire in our eyes and liberty on our lips proclaiming to all that would listen, Let Freedom Ring!We should be proud to be citizens of the greatest nation in the history of humanity. Diligent and ever ready to live for her, speak for her, and die for her. To protect what she gives us each and every day; asking only that we remain: “by the people, for the people”. So that we may be that “city on a hill”, shining brightly so that the whole world may see her glory.We must not forget that day, the day that changed America forever; to always be willing to give our all for her, because she gives all to us. So I leave you to ponder on the timeless words of JFK that were penned for another generation, but are just as applicable today. “Ask not what your country can do for you; instead ask what you can do for your country!”
